Characters in Everyday Use Essay Example
Characters in Everyday Use Essay Example Characters in Everyday Use Essay Characters in Everyday Use Essay ââ¬Å"Everyday Useâ⬠an excellent depiction of the scuffle among the old-fashioned and traditional against the more modern views on the important issue of heritage. Author Alice Walker, aligns the readers with contradictory yet justifiable characters within ââ¬Å"Everyday Useâ⬠by bringing onto light the relatively conflicting personalities of Dee and her sister Maggie through Mamaââ¬â¢s point of view. Walker delivers the story through the narration of Mama, a strong and brutally honest mother ââ¬Å"Have you ever seen a lame animal, perhaps a dogthat is the way my Maggie walks.â⬠whom is guilty of unconditional love towards both of her daughters. Through Mama, Walker strikes such a master stroke that allows the reader to feel genuinely safe against the authenticity of both the author and the narratorââ¬â¢s points of view. Making it doubtful for the reader to question the validity of a motherââ¬â¢s opinion towards her two daughters. Mamaââ¬â¢s oldest daug hter, Dee. A smart, well-educated but materialistic personality. Also very confident ââ¬Å"She was determined to stare down any disasternot flicker for minutes at a time.â⬠and an insanely egoistic. On the flipside to Deeââ¬â¢s characteristics is Mamaââ¬â¢s second daughter, Maggie. An illiterate, awfully shy and incredibly selfless soul. Both of Dee and Maggie are important to the story as both see their heritage and acknowledge it, but not in the same manner. Deeââ¬â¢s character can be confusing. She is often portrayed as an egoistic personality, yet there can be much more dug up to help us better understand her character. We can hopefully all agree that Deeââ¬â¢s flamboyant dressing taste as well as reluctance to be called ââ¬Å"Deeâ⬠are much more than just her being self-centered. Dee can be seen as becoming more and more distinctive towards her heritage and what it stands for. She does not seem to like the fact that ââ¬Å"Deeâ⬠was a name given to her by an oppressor ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s deadI couldnââ¬â¢t bear it any l

Dostoevsky Crime and Punishment Quotations
Dostoevsky 'Crime and Punishment' Quotations Crime and Punishment is a novel by one of the greatest Russian authors, Fyodor Dostoevsky. The novel was published in installments during 1866. Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov, a poor ex-student in St. Petersburg, who is the main protagonist. Here are a few quotes from the novel. Notable Quotes All is in a mans hands and he lets it all slip from cowardice, thats an axiom. It would be interesting to know what it is men are most afraid of. Taking a new step, uttering a new word is what they fear most.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 1, Chapter 1Why am I going there now? Am I capable of that? Is that serious? It is not serious at all. Its simply a fantasy to amuse myself; a plaything! Yes, maybe it is a plaything.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 1, Ch. 1Why am I to be pitied, you say? Yes! Theres nothing to pity me for! I ought to be crucified, crucified on a cross, not pitied! Crucify me, oh judge, crucify me but pity me?- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 1, Ch. 2What if man is not really a scoundrel, man in general, I mean, the whole race of mankind - then all the rest is prejudice, simply artificial terrors and there are no barriers and its all as it should be.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment,Part 1, Ch. 2He ran beside the mare, ran in front of her, saw her being whipped across the eyes, right in the eyes! He was crying, he felt choking, his tears were streaming. One of the men gave him a cut with the whip across the face, he did not feel it. Wringing his hands and screaming, he rushed up to the grey-headed old man with the grey beard, who was shaking his head in disapproval. One woman seized him by the hand and would have taken him away, but he tore himself from her and ran back to the mare. She was almost at the last gasp, but began kicking once more.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 1, Ch. 5 Good God! ... can it be, can it be, that I shall really take an axe, that I shall strike her on the head, split her skull open...that I shall tread in the sticky warm blood, blood...with the axe...Good God, can it be?- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 1, Ch. 5He suddenly heard steps in the room where the old woman lay. He stopped short and was still as death. But all was quiet, so it must have been his fancy. All at once he heard distinctly a faint cry, as though some one had uttered a low broken moan. Then again dead silence for a minute or two. He sat squatting on his heels by the box and waited, holding his breath. Suddenly he jumped up, seized the axe and ran out of the bedroom.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 1, Ch. 7Where is it Ive read that someone condemned to death says or thinks, an hour before his death, that if he had to live on some high rock, on such a narrow ledge that hed only room to stand, and the ocean, everlasting darkness, everlasting solitude, everlasting tempest around him, if he had to remain standing on a square yard of space all his life, a thousand years, eternity, it were better to live so than to die at once! Only to live, to live and live! Life, whatever it may be!...How true it is! Good God, how true! Man is a vile creature!...And vile is he who calls him vile for that- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 2, Ch. 6 Life is real! Havent I lived just now? My life has not yet died with that old woman! The Kingdom of Heaven to her-and now enough, madam, leave me in peace! Now for the reign of reason and light...and of will, and of strength...and now we will see! We will try our strength.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 2, Ch. 7I like them to talk nonsense. Thats mans one privilege over all creation. Through error you come to the truth! I am a man because I err! You never reach any truth without making fourteen mistakes and very likely a hundred and fourteen.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 3, Ch. 1But what can I tell you? I have known Rodion for a year and a half; he is moody, melancholy, proud, and haughty; recently (and perhaps for much longer than I know) he has been morbidly depressed and over-anxious about his health. He is kind and generous. He doesnt like to display his feelings, and would rather seem heartless than talk about them. Sometimes, however, he is not hypochondriacal at all, but simply inhumanly cold and unfeeling. Really, it is as if he had two separate personalities, each dominating him alternately.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 3, Ch. 2 Actions are sometimes performed in a masterly and most cunning way, while the direction of the actions is deranged and dependent on various morbid impressions - its like a dream.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 3, Ch. 3It began with the socialist doctrine. You know their doctrine; crime is a protest against the abnormality of the social organisation and nothing more, and nothing more; no other causes admitted!- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 3, Ch. 5If he has a conscience he will suffer for his mistake. That will be punishment - as well as the prison.- Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment, Part 3, Ch. 5It was dark in the corridor, they were standing near the lamp. For a minute they were looking at one another in silence. Razumikhin remembered that minute all his life. Raskolnikovââ¬â¢s burning and intent eyes grew more penetrating every moment, piercing into his soul, into his consciousness. Suddenly Razumihin started. Something strange, as it were passed between them... Some idea, some hint as it were, slipped, something awful, hideous, and suddenly understood on both sides... Razumihin turned pale.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 4, Ch. 3 I did not bow down to you, I bowed down to all the suffering of humanity.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 4, Ch. 4Power is given only to him who dates to stoop and take it... one must have the courage to dare.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 5, Ch. 4I wanted to murder, for my own satisfaction ... At that moment I did not care a damn whether I would spend the rest of my life like a spider catching them all in my web and sucking the living juices out of them.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 5, Ch. 4Go at once, this very minute, stand at the cross-roads, bow down, first kiss the earth which you have defiled, and then bow down to all the world and say to all men aloud, I am a murderer! Then God will send you life again. Will you go, will you go?- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 5, Ch. 4You ought to thank God, perhaps. How do you know? Perhaps God is saving you for something. But keep a good heart and have less fear! A re you afraid of the great expiation before you? No, it would be shameful to be afraid of it. Since you have taken such a step, you must harden your heart. There is justice in it. You must fulfill the demands of justice. I know that you donââ¬â¢t believe it, but indeed, life will bring you through. You will live it down in time. What you need now is fresh air, fresh air, fresh air!- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 6, Ch. 2 Nothing in this world is harder than speaking the truth, nothing easier than flattery.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 6, Ch. 4Crime? What crime? ... That I killed a vile noxious insect, an old pawnbroker woman, of use to no one! ... Killing her was atonement for forty sins. She was sucking the life out of poor people. Was that a crime?- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 6, Ch. 7If I had succeeded I should have been crowned with glory, but now Im trapped.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 6, Ch. 7It was I killed the old pawnbroker woman and her sister Lizaveta with an axe and robbed them.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Part 6, Ch. 8Youre a gentleman... You shouldnt hack about with an axe; thats not a gentlemans work.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Epilogue 2Some new sorts of microbes were attacking the bodies of men, but these microbes were endowed with intelligence and will ... Men attacked by them became a t once mad and furious.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Epilogue 2 How it happened he did not know. But all at once something seemed to seize him and fling him at her feet. He wept and threw his arms round her knees. For the first instant she was terribly frightened and she turned pale. She jumped up and looked at him trembling. But at the same moment she understood, and a light of infinite happiness came into her eyes. She knew and had no doubt that he loved her beyond everything and that at last the moment had come.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Epilogue 2They wanted to speak, but could not; tears stood in their eyes. They were both pale and thin; but those sick pale faces were bright with the dawn of a new future, of a full resurrection into a new life. They were renewed by love; the heart of each held infinite sources of life for the heart of the other.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Epilogue 2Seven years, only seven years! At the beginning of their happiness at some moments they were both ready to look on those seve n years as though they were seven days. He did not know that the new life would not be given him for nothing, that he would have to pay dearly for it, that it would cost him great striving, great suffering.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Epilogue 2 But that is the beginning of a new story ââ¬â the story of the gradual renewal of a man, the story of his gradual regeneration, of his passing from one world into another, of his initiation into a new unknown life. That might be the subject of a new story, but our present story is ended.- Fyodor Dostoevsky,à Crime and Punishment, Epilogue 2

Perfect Blackjack Strategy 15 Charts to Help You Master the Game
Perfect Blackjack Strategy 15 Charts to Help You Master the Game SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Blackjack is the most popular casino table game in the United States, and it's one of the most popular casino games in the world. You probably know how to play blackjack, but do you know how to play blackjack well? Do you want to win more money at the casino by learning blackjack strategy? If you play your cards right, you may be able to make enough money to see Cirque Du Soleil. Blackjack strategy lets you know the right play to make to maximize your winnings. It tells you what to do based on your hand and the card that the dealer is showing. If you perfectly follow the strategies outlined in this guide, you can reduce the casinoââ¬â¢s advantage to less than .5%, making blackjack the most advantageous game to the player in a casino. Perfect blackjack strategy has been determined using probability theory and computer simulations which have figured out the best play in each situation. In this article, I'll explain perfect blackjack strategy and how to use it to your advantage. I've focused on playing at a casino, but the same strategies apply if you're playing online or at a home game. The Basic Rules of Blackjack The goal of blackjack is to beat the dealerââ¬â¢s hand without going over 21. Before cards are dealt, players place their bets. Each player starts with two cards that are face up. Face cards are worth 10. Aces are worth 1 or 11; whichever makes a better hand. One of the dealerââ¬â¢s two cards is face down until the very end after every player completes his hand. You can ask for another card (hit) or stick with your current hand (stand). You have the option to keep hitting until youââ¬â¢re satisfied with your hand, or you go over 21 (bust). If you bust, the dealer wins regardless of the dealerââ¬â¢s eventual hand. The dealer must hit until her cards total 17 or higher. Blackjack! (banspy/Flickr) Defining Blackjack Terms These are the blackjack terms you must know to determine the right play to make in each situation. I put the terms in alphabetical order. Blackjack: The best possible hand in blackjack. It consists of an ace and a card with a value of 10. At most casinos, blackjack plays 3:2. So for example, if you bet $10, getting blackjack pays $15. Bust: Busting is going over 21. As mentioned previously, if you bust, you automatically lose. Double Down/Doubling: Doubling down or doubling is when a player places an additional bet equal to his original bet and then receives just one additional card. You can only double down with your first two cards. For example, if you bet $5 and get dealt an 11, you can place an additional $5 bet and receive one more card. Regardless of whether you get a 2 or a 10, you canââ¬â¢t hit again. Hard/Hard Hand: Any hand that doesnââ¬â¢t contain an ace that can count as an 11. A 10 and a 7 is a hard 17. Hit: Hitting is asking for another card. Insurance: When the dealer shows an ace, the player can place a side bet of up to half of his original bet. If the dealer has blackjack, the insurance bet pays 2 to 1. If the dealer doesnââ¬â¢t have blackjack, the insurance bet loses. Based on probability, you should never take insurance. Push: When you push, your hand ties with the dealer and you keep your original bet. For instance, if you and the dealer both have 19, you push. Soft/Soft Hand: A soft hand is a hand that includes an ace valued at 11 instead of 1. For example, an ace and a 6 is a soft 17. You can be more aggressive with soft hands because thereââ¬â¢s no risk of busting. If you hit on a soft 17 and get a 5, the ace will be valued at 1 and youââ¬â¢ll have a 12. Split: If a player is dealt two equal cards, he can split them into two separate hands by placing an additional bet equal to his original bet. For example, if you bet $10 and are dealt two 8ââ¬â¢s, for another $10, you can split your hand into two separate hands, each with one 8. Stand/Stay: Standing or staying is sticking with your hand and no longer asking for more cards. Surrender: Surrendering is basically giving up before seeing what the dealer gets. If you surrender, you abandon your hand and recover half of your initial bet. Surrendering is the best option when itââ¬â¢s extremely likely that youââ¬â¢ll lose given your hand and the card the dealer is showing. Unfortunately, many casinos donââ¬â¢t offer the surrender option. A casino blackjack table (Thomas Hawk/Flickr) Blackjack Basic Strategy To perfect your blackjack game and completely minimize the house advantage, thereââ¬â¢s quite a bit to remember. However, if you can just memorize the basic blackjack strategy rules, then youââ¬â¢ll be well ahead of the novice player. Following these rules wonââ¬â¢t always be the 100% perfect play, but it almost always will be, and again, these rules are much easier to remember than perfect blackjack strategy. Compared to absolute perfect blackjack play, following these rules will only cost you about one hand in 12 hours of play. Basic Blackjack Strategy Chart Here are the charts outlining basic strategy. They tell you what to do given the value of your hand (left column) and the card the dealer is showing (right two columns). HARD 2 to 6 7 to A 4 to 8 HIT HIT 9 DOUBLE HIT 10 or 11 DOUBLE DOUBLE if more than dealer* 12 to 16 STAND HIT 17 to 21 STAND STAND *This means that if you have a 10 and the dealer is showing 9 or less, you should double. If the dealer is showing 10 or an ace, just hit. Similarly, if you have 11, double if the dealer is showing 10 or less. If the dealer is showing an ace, just hit. SOFT 2 to 6 7 to A 13 to 15 HIT HIT 16 to 18 DOUBLE HIT 19 to 21 STAND STAND SPLITS (Yes or No)* 2 to 6 7 to A 2/2, 3/3, 6/6, 7/7, 9/9 YES NO 8/8, A/A YES YES 4/4, 5/5, 10/10 NO NO *If you donââ¬â¢t split, treat your hand like a hard hand. For example, if you donââ¬â¢t split with two 7ââ¬â¢s, make the appropriate play for a hard 14. Additional Rules On top of the blackjack strategy charts above, here are a few additional rules to remember: Surrender if you have a 16 and the dealer is showing a 10. If the table doesnââ¬â¢t allow surrendering, then hit. If the strategy says to double but youââ¬â¢re not allowed, then hit, except you should stand with a soft 18. Never take insurance. When the dealer shows an ace, the player can place a side bet of up to half of his original bet. If the dealer has blackjack, the insurance bet pays 2 to 1. If the dealer doesnââ¬â¢t have blackjack, the insurance bet loses. Similarly, never take even money when you get blackjack. If youââ¬â¢re dealt blackjack and the dealer is showing an ace, youââ¬â¢ll be offered an even money payout in case the dealer has blackjack. For example, if you bet $10, if you take even money youââ¬â¢ll win $10 instead of the $15 for a 3:2 payout. If you decline the even money and the dealer has blackjack, youââ¬â¢ll push and youââ¬â¢ll just get your original bet back. Perfect Blackjack Strategy While following the basic blackjack strategy will almost always have you make the right play, there are occasions when it wonââ¬â¢t. If youââ¬â¢re really trying to master blackjack, then just following the basic strategy wonââ¬â¢t quite cut it. The perfect blackjack strategy charts are based on the slightly different versions of the game. Blackjack can be played with a single deck or 4-8 decks. Most casinos Iââ¬â¢ve been to have single deck or use six decks. Also, some casinos require the dealer to stand with a soft 17, and some mandate the dealer to hit with a soft 17. If the dealer has to stand with a soft 17, that will give you better odds. Perfect Blackjack Strategy Charts Here are the charts you need to memorize to get your blackjack strategy perfect. The numbers going horizontally at the top of the chart represent the card that the dealer is showing, and the numbers in the left most column are the value of your hand. This is the key to to the abbreviations used in the charts: H= Hit S= Stand Dh= Double down if allowed, if not hit Ds= Double down if allowed, if not stand Rh= Surrender if allowed, if not hit Rs= Surrender if allowed, if not stand Rp= Surrender if allowed, if not split P= Split Ph= Split if double after hit is allowed, if not hit Pd= Split if double after hit is allowed, if not double Ps= Split if double after hit is allowed, if not stand Single Deck Blackjack Charts These are the perfect strategy charts for single deck blackjack. The first set covers what to do if the dealer is required to stand on a soft 17 and the second set covers the strategy if the dealer is expected to hit on a soft 17. Each includes three charts that you can use depending on whether your hand is hard, soft, or split. Youââ¬â¢ll see that the charts are extremely similar to those for single deck. Again, the first set is for tables where the dealer is required to stand on a soft 17 and the second set is for tables where the dealer is expected to hit on a soft 17. Start with learning basic blackjack strategy! Then, if you want, you can move on to perfect strategy. If you donââ¬â¢t have much time to learn, I recommend sticking with basic blackjack strategy. Remember that youââ¬â¢ll almost always make the right play with basic strategy, and the few mistakes you may make wonââ¬â¢t cost you much. Some casinos will allow you to refer to blackjack charts while youââ¬â¢re playing, so you can also print them out and refer to them while playing. But the other players may get annoyed with you if you keep looking at your charts. If you want to learn perfect blackjack strategy, I advise you to learn one chart at a time. Also, if you know youââ¬â¢ll be playing a specific type of blackjack (e.g. 6 decks, dealer hits on soft 17) at a casino, just focus on the charts that are applicable to the game you'll be playing. Furthermore, once you think youââ¬â¢ve learned the blackjack charts, youââ¬â¢ll remember your perfect strategy by drilling it into your head by playing tons of hands and testing your knowledge. If you ever forget your perfect strategy while playing, just use basic strategy. Play the Best Game for You Finally, always remember that you want to play the blackjack games that offer you the best odds. There are many variations of blackjack at casinos that will impact your odds of winning. The ideal version of blackjack will allow doubling, doubling after splitting, splitting, and surrendering. If any of these arenââ¬â¢t allowed, your odds of winning will be lowered. Most are normally offered, but I havenââ¬â¢t found many casinos that allow surrendering. Additionally, your odds will improve if the dealer has to stand on a soft 17 instead of hitting on a soft 17. Finally, you want a table that will pay blackjack 3:2 as opposed to a lower payout (sometimes 6:5) or even money.

Erik Weihenmayer treated as one of the most successful man to reach his dream. He climbed the Mount Everest being the first blind men to reach the peak of the Everest (Throop and Castellucci, 2003). Now it is very important to understand why he is been treated as one of the most successful man, well, reaching the personal goal with the help of professional experience can be treated as the success. He was a blinded at the age of 13 and started climbing from the age of 16. With hard work and touch of professionalism he reached his goal and that is the reason he was successful. Free Market Economy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Free Market Economy - Essay Example The fact that a free market economy operates automatically is one of its major advantages. Moreover, when firms, consumers and workers pursue their own self interest through buying and selling in competitive markets, it helps in minimizing the central economic problem of scarcity, by encouraging the efficient use of resources (Lipsey 2003). In an actual scenario, however, markets fail to achieve maximum efficiency in the allocation of scarce resources resulting in inequality and unfavorable externalities therefore governments feel it necessary to intervene thus, in practice, perfect free market economies do not exist. Even in countries like USA, Germany and France, which are considered to be practicing free market to a great extent, there are many areas that are in governmentââ¬â¢s control. For example, in USA, there are laws proposed to verify illegal trade practices. They also have a government department called the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) that ensures all consumer products that are taken in to the body are toxic free. There are number of reasons as to why a free market ascends level of inequality and inefficiency in the economy. Firstly, a perfectly performing price system, as the case in a free market, does not provide for the issue of an ethical income distribution. In such a system, the limited supplies of goods and services are rationed out to those who can afford it. In other words, the scarce resources are usually diverted to the production of luxuries for the rich before an adequate output of commodities for the poor is produced. In addition, essential goods and services that are socially desirable may not be produced in sufficient amount under the price system because they are not profit yielding. These goods and services include health, education, defence, lighting, etc. This is the reason why the state provides, in most countries, for what are considered to be basic needs. Furthermore, a free market economy fails to consider all the costs and benefits associated with the production and c onsumption of commodities. Since they are profit motivated, producers tend to ignore the costs they impose on society as a result of their activities (Begg 1997). In this kind of economy, there is limited competition between firms. A few giant firms may control an industry, in such a case consumer sovereignty is affected; the bargaining position of consumers is weakened considerably while the sellers position is enhances resulting in higher prices and restricted output. Lack of competition and high profits also tend to reduce the incentive for firms to be efficient and resourceful. Due to the imperfection in market mechanism, market economy tends to further increase the disparities between people, that is, those with power and property gain at the expense of those without it. It also, due to its self interested behavior, tends to encourage greed, materialism and the acquisition of power (Sloman 1997). In my opinion, an economy should use the market mechanism to some extent and allow a certain degree of government intervention. Such economies are called mixed economies and all real world economies are a mixture of the two systems. Such a system proves beneficial for all the parties as it gives everyone the freedom to choose and produce while maintaining equality in the economy. 2.1 According to demand and supply analysis, there is an inverse relationship between the price and quantity demanded for a product. When the price for a product is too high, the quantity demanded eventually falls. Likewise, when price is low, quantity demanded increases. The movement along the demand curve is

Consumers, workers, businesses and owners have the freedom to produce, buy and sell goods and service in the market. The only limiting factor is the price at which they are able and willing to pay and sell and the capital that they have (Amadeo, 1). The property economy is driven by the motive of self interest where goods and services are sold at the highest bidder while they pay the minimum for the services and goods. The forces of competition maintain the prices at reasonable levels and ensure that services and goods are offered efficiently. All sellers and buyers have the same access and information on which they base their decisions. The government ensures that markets are open and operating (Amadeo, 1). Most goods and services wanted are produced in the most effectual manner. There is innovation in this economy which is profitable. Also, the persons and business that are interested in innovations accumulate a lot of capital which can lead to higher quality of goods (Amadeo, 1). The market operates by competition and there are individuals in the society who are underprivileged. In this economic set-up, there is reward for individualsââ¬â¢ adeptness in competition, and thus, it reflects their values and organization (Amadeo, 1). The most commonly thought premier market economy is the US. This has been a success because of its constitution which has maximum requirements that ease and protect the features of a market economy (Amadeo, 1). The materials that we interacted with in class have helped in understanding what is meant by demand and supply and how they control the manufacturing of goods and services. They have been useful in understanding how and why producers are driven by profits while buyers want to save the highest possible amount. Through the materials, one is able to understand why the market has such characteristics as private property, freedom of choice,

Summary - Essay Example When the fair trade movement began in the mid 20th century, its aim was to reduce poverty levels among the poor. The organization has changed names although its aim remains the successful fair trade in goods (Sarah Stanley 1). Fair trade is beneficial to both consumers and producers. However, fair trade faces many problems. For example, a guaranteed market tempts the farmers to produce poor quality coffee and it hurts the consumers. The assessment of problems of fair trade is not well explained. The assessment does not adequately state the successes of fair trade, and this makes it hard to point out its deficiencies. In addition, the assessment does not indicate how it concluded that fair trade does not eliminate child labor but displaces it. One is left wondering whether fair trade has reduced poverty among coffee farmers or not. In addition, how does fair trade manage to secure competitive prices for coffee farmers as opposed to free trade? Fair trade must adapt to new market demands and encourage the producers to improve the quality of their goods. The measures shall help both consumers and producers in the long
